The SNC2D Grade 10 Science course introduces students to advanced scientific concepts across biology, chemistry, physics, and climate science. Students will explore the interconnectedness of science, technology, and society through investigations into cell division, chemical reactions, climate systems, and optics.

Aligned with the Ontario Curriculum, this course emphasizes scientific inquiry, data analysis, and problem-solving. Students will plan and conduct experiments, interpret results, and connect scientific principles to real-world applications, such as addressing climate change and understanding technological advancements.

Graduates of SNC2D will develop foundational skills for advanced science courses and careers in medicine, engineering, environmental science, and technology. The interactive learning modules foster curiosity and analytical skills, essential for both academic and practical success.

1 Biology
In this unit, students will learn about the nested organization of matter and life and describe how each item accumulates into higher complexity. Students will learn how to identify the boundary between living and non-living and about the seven characteristics of life. Students will also investigate cell cycles, mitosis, and the structure of animal and plant tissues and body systems.		 26 hrs
2 Chemistry
In this unit, students will learn about lab safety when conducting chemical experiments. Students will also learn about the periodic tables and the unique properties of the different kinds of elements. Students will also be able to name chemical compounds and explain their types of bonding. Students will investigate chemical reactions like acid-base neutralization reactions.		 27.5 hrs
3 Physics
In this unit, students will learn about the natural and artificial sources of light and describe how it travels. Students will learn to explain how colors are perceived using the properties of reflection and absorption. Students will learn about plane, concave, and convex mirrors. Students will learn about refraction and different light speeds and about converging and diverging lenses. This unit will also take a closer look at the human eye, its structure, and how images are formed by it. Students will gain an understanding of the limits of human perception, how optical illusions can trick the eye and the brain, and the different types of mirages.		 31.5 hrs
4 Climate
In this unit, students will learn about weather and climate and the biomes found in Canada. Students will learn to define conduction, convection, and radiation and link these to Earth’s climate systems. This unit will also explain what thermohaline circulation is, why it is important, and what would happen if it were to change or stop. Students will take a closer look at the atmospheric layers and their composition and learn how the greenhouse effect works. Students will also analyze various pieces of evidence that suggest our climate is undergoing a change. This unit will also go over energy transfer as well as negative and positive feedback loops and their influence on climate. Students will learn about Earth’s spheres and the importance of nutrients for maintaining health. Finally, students will learn about the different initiatives being taken to combat climate change.		 31.5 hrs

At Canadian Virtual School (CVS), the evaluation process is designed to accurately reflect each student’s mastery of curriculum expectations and essential skills for effective learning. The final grade represents the quality and consistency of a student’s overall achievement throughout the course and aligns with the achievement chart provided by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

Credit Requirements:
A credit for this course will be granted if the student achieves a final grade of 50% or higher. The grade reflects the student’s demonstrated knowledge, skills, and understanding of the course expectations.

Grade Breakdown:

  • 70% Ongoing Assessment:
    This portion of the grade is based on evaluations conducted throughout the course. It reflects the student’s most consistent level of achievement, with special consideration given to more recent evidence of learning. Students will engage in a variety of assignments, quizzes, and activities that demonstrate their progress across multiple competencies.

  • 30% Final Evaluation:
    This portion of the grade is determined by a comprehensive final evaluation administered at the end of the course. The final evaluation may take the form of:

    • A final exam
    • A culminating task
    • A combination of both an exam and a culminating task

Report Card Delivery:

  • Report cards are issued twice during the course: once at the midterm and again upon course completion.
  • Students will receive their report cards directly via email.

    • Curriculum expectations are evaluated and reported as a percentage grade, reflecting the student’s overall performance in the course.
    • The course median is also reported to provide context for the student’s performance relative to the class.
    • Teachers include personalized comments highlighting the student’s strengths, areas for improvement, and actionable next steps for continued success.

  2. Learning Skills and Work Habits:

    • Learning skills such as responsibility, collaboration, and initiative are assessed and reported as a letter grade (E – Excellent, G – Good, S – Satisfactory, N – Needs Improvement). These grades represent one of four levels of accomplishment and provide valuable feedback on the student’s approach to learning.

  3. Credit Completion:

    • Upon course completion, the report card will indicate whether the student has earned an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) credit for the course.

Official Transcript Management:

  • For students attending school in Ontario, a copy of the final report card will be sent to the student’s main school. The school will then add the completed course to the student’s official Ontario Student Transcript (OST).
